We all experience challenging events in life from time to time. While most of the time we may be able to cope or adjust to these difficulties, some life experiences can cause unusually high levels of emotional distress and become so psychologically overwhelming that a person is unable to cope as usual or is unable to process the information adaptively. This can be referred to as a traumatic event. Trauma is essentially about how our body perceives situations and can create lasting effects that disrupts how we perceive and/or relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us. This may include impacts on our physical, mental/cognitive, emotional, social, and/or spiritual health. Traumatic events can include motor vehicle accidents, violence, physical or sexual assault, ongoing emotional abuse or bullying, childhood neglect, medical procedures, problems with chronic illness, concussions, etc.

The good news - healing is possible! While trauma therapy doesn’t take away the memory, treatment helps you to no longer experience the memories as overwhelming and distressing. You will be able to feel like you can relax and feel safe in the present.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an effective, physiologically-based therapy that appears to have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information and allows for previously disturbing material to be experienced in a new, less distressing way. EMDR can differ from other types of therapy because it does not require in-depth discussions of all the details of a traumatic experience, which is a relief to many people, as talking about these experiences in detail can feel triggering or even re-traumatizing at times.
